High-Tech X-Rays

One of the new technologies being used is digitized X-rays. They are replacing traditional radiographs or X-Rays. Digital X-rays have been in use for a number of years but they have become much more common in dental practices because they are faster and more efficient than traditional X-Rays. Digital X-rays use an electronic sensor and phosphor plate instead of the traditional X-Ray film. The result is a digital image that can be stored in a computer and viewed at any time. These images can be compared to past images and easily display any changes over time. And as an added bonus, digital X-Rays significantly reduce the already low radiation dose.

Thinner Veneers

Porcelain veneers are very popular with cosmetic dental patients. They are thin shells or “covers” that are placed on the front of teeth to make them appear white and almost flawless. The dental procedure requires some modification or reshaping of the tooth before attaching a veneer. The thickness of the veneer requires this space to be created. Today veneers are thinner with similar strength characteristics. Therefore a cosmetic dentist will remove less of the tooth surface before attaching the porcelain veneer. Keeping more of the natural tooth is always the preferred choice.

Faster Crowns And Bridges

In the past crowns and bridges were made in a dental laboratory after a mold of the patient’s tooth or teeth was made by the cosmetic dentist. Now the best cosmetic dentist in Houston is using CAD (computer assisted design) and CAM (computer assisted manufacture) technology. The dental patient’s crown or bridge can now be made in the dentist’s office.

Bonding Teeth

There have been improvements in bonding materials and bonding techniques over the recent years. Today most bonding material is a resin or plastic material. It is considered a more attractive material and has a longer lifespan. Chipped teeth look more natural with this new bonding material and it is often applied in layers for additional strength.

Composite Fillings

The metal fillings that many people have are almost a thing of the past. Today composite fillings are more natural looking because of the wider range of color shades available. Many dental patients have decided to have their metal fillings removed and replaced with composite fillings.

New Gum Disease Treatments

Dental patients who suffer from gum disease now have several very new and exciting treatments that may be utilized.  Gum disease usually occurs when there is a “pocket” or space that forms between a tooth and the gum. Bacteria will then “take up residence” in this available space and affect the health of bone and teeth.  Traditional treatments include cleaning the area of plaque, tartar, and the bacteria and gum surgery in more severe cases.

Today gum disease treatment has advanced with new technology. In addition to cleaning the area of the gum disease the dental focus is on regeneration of bone and tissue. The goal is to help the patient’s body regenerate new bone and tissue and this is done with various combinations of bone grafts, collagen membranes, lasers, and proteins.
